Hello Friends, I need to make you aware of a conservation plan that is in need of your help. The focus of this plan is to save and restore stocks of Puget Sound’s Rockfish population. In short, these populations have been drastically reduced in Puget Sound due to a variety of fishing activities. Once considered a "junk fish" these animals were targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries after other species were depleted. Due to their long life-span (30-200 years!) and slow rate of maturity (10+ years) this species is highly susceptible to environmental stress and fishing pressures.

The good news is that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has developed a Puget Sound Rockfish Conservation Plan. This plan will help ensure the survival and increase the abundance of these species in Puget Sound. In addition to rockfish, all marine species in Puget Sound will benefit by enacting new fishing regulations and establishing new marine protected areas!

However, organizations that represent the recreational fishing industry are trying to stop this initiative because it may restrict recreational fishing opportunities. But, these plans are about saving these species and ensuring a healthy population that can support commercial and recreational opportunities. So, please, stand up and be heard and tell your friends! Voice your comments by contacting WDFW today.

Thank you,
Dave Smith
